Country Property of the Week - Carrowroe Estate, Roscommon
One of the finest small estates in the Midlands with an important yet manageable Georgian house, cut stone courtyard, gardens, fine woodland and good quality land. Less than 0.5 miles from Roscommon on the Athlone Road. 51 miles from Galway and 91 miles from Dublin.
Carrowroe Park, built about 1816 by the Goff Family, is approached via a long avenue and although well maintained it is in need of updating. The house has many period features including exceptional plasterwork. The Goff family were well liked locally and Robert and Thomas Goff, before they went to fight in the Crimean war, wrote off their tenants rent arrears. It was Robert Goff who later married Dorothea FlitzClarence, granddaughter of William IV, by his liaison with the then famous Anglo Irish actress known as Mrs Jordan. Robert was elected MP for Roscommon but after considerable acrimony over the conduct of the election he had run up legal costs of £40,000 and as a result he had to sell Oakport House, a property he owned near Boyle, Co. Roscommon and rent out Carrowroe House for a number of years to a family named Burke, eventually coming back to reside in it about 1875.
It was Robert’s son, Clarence who sold the property to William Molloy in 1920. William Molloy was a native of Claremorris who had gone to the United States shortly after leaving school. He was active in Irish politics when there and was a close friend of John Devoy. He came back to Ireland on holiday in 1920 but instead of returning bought Carrowroe House where he farmed extensively for many years. On the strength of his work for the Irish freedom movement in the United States he was appointed Senator in 1922 and held his seat until 1942. He established businesses in Roscommon that traded successfully for many years. On his death Carrowroe House passed to family members.
