A home with a view, Gazette Newspapers, 25 May 2008
On a clear day looking south from Carrick in Howth, the visitor can see right across Dublin Bay to Dun Laoghaire. The house on the Old Carrickbrack Road was built in 1921 and is set in 2.78 acres of mature gardens. Beautiful period features, such as parquet floors, open fire-places with cast-iron grates, porcelain sanitary ware and lead-panelled windows give the house its distinctive 1920s character.
But, considering its age, the house feels extraordinarily modern. There are exposed wooden ceiling beams in the entrance hall and the three formal reception rooms (there are two more reception rooms to the rear of the house), while the kitchen is equipped with an American-style fridge-freezer, an integrated De Dietrich self-cleaning oven and all the other usual conveniences.
A beautiful 1920s arched doorway leads from the kitchen to a large family area with a ceramic tiled floor. The master bedroom is also on the ground floor and has a bay window with seating looking out over the gardens.
Also for enjoying the view, there is a sun room at the front of the house, while a long, terracotta-tiled porch wraps around the front and side of the house.
Upstairs there are six double bedrooms, two bathrooms, two en suites and an old sewing room, which now provides additional storage.
Outside the house there are two garages, one beside the house and the other at a second entrance to the grounds. Among the garden's rhododendron, apple and cherry trees there is a large outhouse and an original glass-house with access to the property's well.
Carrick is for sale for €5.5 million and the agents are Colliers Jackson-Stops, contactable on 6333700.
